In 1985, a group of local physicians in the Tuscaloosa area provided patients a choice of facilities by opening the area's first, free-standing, outpatient surgical center. This group of physicians recognized that top quality one-day surgery can be delivered in a cost effective manner, away from a hospital setting in a modern, convenient facility.
From 1995 to 2005, the surgical center was known as HealthSouth Surgical Center of Tuscaloosa, primarily under the direction of HealthSouth with local physician involvement.
When the local physician owners increased their ownership percentage and implemented a new organizational structure, the name changed back to its original name, Tuscaloosa Surgical Center, in April 2005.
Tuscaloosa Surgical Center is a joint venture between community physicians and HealthSouth and employs 67 full- and part-time employees.
The facility encompasses 26,000 square feet and utilizes five operating rooms and seven procedure rooms.
The Center is licensed by the State of Alabama as an Ambulatory Surgical Center, accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO), and certified by Medicare.
